Hong Kong Commercial Daily: Yuanjiang Vessels Riding the Waves of the International Market's Blue Ocean
As autumn coolness gradually sets in, the production workshop of Hunan Haichuan Yacht Company in Yuanjiang City, Yiyang, Hunan Province is bustling with activity. Workers are sweating profusely as they weld and polish several luxury yachts. "This yacht is scheduled to be delivered to a client in Dubai by the end of this year!" said Zhang Chaowen, head of the design department at Hunan Haichuan Yacht Co., pointing to a yacht under construction. "Our company has nearly 50 million in overseas orders in the first three quarters, and several large overseas orders are expected to be finalized in the fourth quarter, including a 160 million order from Singapore." Zhang Chaowen introduced that Haichuan yachts have been exported to countries such as Dubai, Malaysia, and Thailand, and a sales branch has been established in Singapore, showing strong potential in the overseas market.
Yuanjiang City, located on the southern bank of Dongting Lake, gathers the four rivers of Xiang, Zi, Yuan, and Li, with a dense water network and developed water transport, boasting a long history of shipbuilding. The shipbuilding industry in Yuanjiang flourished as early as the Northern Song Dynasty, with local craftsmen creating sailing boats that sailed "800 miles on Dongting Lake." In the 1950s, Yuanjiang produced the famous "Eight Winds" sailing boat, which was promoted nationwide. Entering the new era, Yuanjiang's shipbuilding industry is writing a new chapter of brilliance, with a large number of practical and stylish boats setting sail for all corners of the world, exporting to overseas markets in Asia, Africa, and Europe. According to the relevant person in charge of the Yuanjiang Shipbuilding Manufacturing Industrial Park, in the past decade, the total output value of the Yuanjiang shipbuilding industry has grown by more than 20% annually, with various types of ship manufacturing accounting for over 80% of Hunan Province. In 2023, the total industrial output value reached 10.246 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 24.9%. As the only shipbuilding manufacturing cluster in Hunan Province, the Yuanjiang Shipbuilding Manufacturing Industrial Park currently has 59 ship and supporting enterprises, including 26 large-scale enterprises, and has initially formed an industrial pattern focused on the manufacturing of new energy boats, composite material yachts, business boats, special boats, steel transport ships, container ships, and engineering ships. The construction of the platform is accelerating, providing strong support for the growth and strengthening of the Yuanjiang shipbuilding industry. The Yuanjiang Shipbuilding Manufacturing Industrial Park covers a total planned area of 5.8 square kilometers, with the shipbuilding characteristic town area covering 4.34 square kilometers, mainly divided into two large areas: Shiji Lake and Sainan Lake, with approximately 7 kilometers of shoreline resources available throughout the park. The park has created the province's first "Shipbuilding Maker Center" and CCS ship monitoring platform; it has established a ship information platform and a ship talent training base in collaboration with Changsha University of Science and Technology, Yiyang Vocational College, and Yiyang Yangfan Seafarer Training School, providing a solid platform for technological innovation. It is understood that the industrial park successfully hosted the "Hunan Province Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering Equipment Industry-Academia-Research Docking Conference" in 2016, and jointly held solar-powered ship, new energy ship technology development and product promotion conferences with relevant enterprises in 2017, 2018, and 2020. In addition, the park actively connects with financial institutions to explore and establish a multi-party participation, market-oriented investment and financing service system involving the park, banking and credit departments, and enterprises, providing reliable financial support for technological innovation in enterprises.
In addition to Haichuan yachts making their way to Dubai, the Yuanjiang Shipbuilding Manufacturing Industrial Park is home to several other strong shipbuilding enterprises, forming a yacht and public boat manufacturing base led by Yaguang Technology and Haichuan Yachts, a steel ship manufacturing base led by Taohuajiang Yachts and Jinhang Shipbuilding, and a ship outfitting and accessory production base led by Dayang Machinery and Jingyi Technology. At Jinhang Shipbuilding Company, the reporter saw an 80-meter barge under construction, which is a barge contracted by Jinhang Shipbuilding Company for the Jiangsu Maritime Safety Administration. Hunan Jinhang Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. has an annual ship production capacity of 200,000 tons, is a national-level specialized and innovative "little giant" enterprise, a national-level high-tech enterprise, and a national-level intellectual property advantage enterprise, as well as a champion enterprise in Hunan's manufacturing industry. The company has independently developed and built the country's first LNG/diesel dual-fuel open container ship for specific routes, multifunctional emergency rescue ships, and the province's first LNG oil and gas refueling barge "Xiang Energy No. 1," overcoming key technical difficulties in the application of LNG new energy power in shipbuilding. "The proportion of R&D expenditure in the Yuanjiang shipbuilding manufacturing cluster accounts for 3.1% of the technical trade income, and the main business income of the high-tech industry accounts for 61.22% of the cluster's main business income," said the relevant person in charge of the Yuanjiang Shipbuilding Manufacturing Industrial Park, indicating that the innovation capability is gradually increasing, which is the confidence for Yuanjiang ships to ride the blue ocean of the international market.
